Thermage Skin Tightening

As the last of the Baby Boomers turn 40 this year, aesthetic procedures that can help improve appearance are in higher demand than ever before. This is due in part to the fact that as we grow older, the collagen that provides structure to our face begins to break down. As a result, fine line and wrinkles appear as the skin begins to sag. Every year about 100,00 people undergo a facelift in North America. The procedure is invasive with many potential complications and requires a long period of recovery.

Many patients want to regain a more youthful appearance without undergoing a risky procedure and having to take time off work or daily activities for recovery.

Thermage, also known as ThermaCool or ThermaLift has been featured on the Oprah show as a safe, clinically proven and innovative new cosmetic procedure that provides a non-surgical method for tightening loose skin and wrinkles. Although anyone can benefit from Thermage's skin tightening procedure, the ideal candidate is between age 35 and 60 and suffers from mild to moderate skin laxity of the face or body.

Thermage can be performed on the entire face and neck and smaller tips have been developed to treat the delicate area around the eyes as well. The procedure itself is normally done as a single treatment that takes from one to two hours depending on the area to be treated. There is no downtime as patients may return to their daily activities right after the procedure. Furthermore, other rejuvenation treatments such as IPL, fillers or Botox can be combined together to complement the procedure for maximum benefit.

How Thermage actually works is that it uses radiofrequency energy to alter collagen in the skin. A single treatment causes not only shortening of collagen strands but also stimulates growth of new collagen over a period of about 6 months, which further reduces wrinkles and renews facial contours . The procedure is not invasive and does not require surgery or injections of any kind. The effect of the treatment can last for many years depending on the individual’s aging process influenced by diet, sun exposure, smoking or heredity.

Thermage is very safe, but with any medical procedure there are a few risks involved. Some of the complications that can occur include temporary skin damage, mild redness or swelling, or mild pain beneath the jaw. It is important to point out that these side effects are minor compared to those of a traditional facelift.
